Lesson 03 · Jesus answers a trap question
The two that hold everything
“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two hang all the law and the prophets.”
Matthew 22:36–40
They asked Jesus to rank 613 commandments, hoping He'd pick wrong. He answered by quoting two lines from the Old Testament and saying everything else hangs on them.
'Hang' is a carpenter's word — like a door on hinges. Take these two away and the rest swings loose.
'All your heart' is the key phrase. Not most. Not the presentable parts. Whole-hearted love for God is the target Scripture keeps naming, and it's what every other command is describing in detail.
So if you want a test for any teaching, any practice, any decision: does it produce love for God and love for people? If not, something has gone off the rails.
Put plainly
Everything in the Bible is hinged to two commands. If a rule isn't producing love, you're holding it wrong.

- Which is harder for you right now — loving God wholly, or loving a specific person?
- Is there a 'rule' you keep that has stopped producing love?
