A new heart, not just a clean record
“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.”
Ezekiel 36:26–27
Israel is in exile. The temple is rubble. Every external support for their faith is gone, and God makes a promise about the one place they hadn't thought to look: inside them.
Notice what He promises. Not better rules. Not more willpower. A different heart — a stone one swapped out for a living one.
And then the reason it works: 'I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes.' Obedience stops being something you grind out and becomes something that grows out of a changed inside.
This is the thing Scripture keeps pointing at. Forgiveness deals with your record. This deals with your wanting. Both are on the table, and most people only ever ask for the first.
Put plainly
God offers more than a cleared record. He offers a changed heart — and gives His Spirit to make it actually work.
